Holding my paper heart in my hands - a handmade heart tutorial

Hi there lovelies!

Well this is the time of year when love is in the air.

This seems like the perfect time to share the paper heart tutorial that I have been wanting to do for a while.

Let me put my hand up now and tell you the idea is not mine, as much as I would love to take credit for it. I actually saw it on a TV show (Super scrimpers) one day and loved the idea so much promptly got all the bits I needed and started to furiously make paper hearts, and fastooned them all over the house for Christmas.

They look so pretty and rustic and have such a nice hand made feel to them, yet are quick and easy to make. Trust me at the moment I am not big into faff or complicated, or expensive no matter how gorgeous it might look after.

So here is my paper hearts tutorial for you for Valentines Day (these would also be AWESOME decorations for a wedding!) All the photo's below are mine however, and show the hearts around the house.

First you need some equipment/materials:

  • Old book (libraries - items for sale section and charity shops are really good sources)
  • pen
  • ruler
  • scissors
  • stanley knife (to cut the pages out of the book)
  • twine or ribbon

Here are some I prepared earlier

To make the hearts you to cut strips of paper to size, then staple them both ends with a bit of twine and one end. Easy!

You will have 6 strips for each heart.
Each strip is 2 cm wide
1st two cut at 12cm
2nd two cut at 10cm
3rd two cut at 8cm

  • Once you have cut your strips to size, then get a length of ribbon or twine and cut enough to make a loop to hang the heart with.
  • Then you get the first strip (longest first) and then make a loop with the twine and hold it against the top of the first strip. Then take the 2nd matching strip and sandwich the loop in between the two strips so the loop hangs down in between them.

  • Now you need to duplicate the laying of strips in the pairs either side of string. When you have done this, the shortest strips are on the outside.

  • Now staple the top of these strips together making sure that you catch the two ends of the twine in the staple as well so they are all secure and joined together.

  • Now you need to turn the strips the other way up so that the staple is at the bottom and the string loop is at the top, so that the strips are ready for making into a heart shape. The shortest strips should now be on the inside and the longest on the outside because you are bending the paper back on itself.

  • You do this by putting the unstapled ends of the strips together. It is easier to start with the shortest inside strips first, and matching the ends up neatly until you have all 6 ends together as you did for the top. By doing this, the paper naturally forms a heart shape.

See! I told you this was easy!

  • Now with all the ends gathered staple this end as well and VOILA you have a paper heart!

Just carry on making them and once you have a collection of hearts you just thread them onto another long bit of twine or some colourful ribbon and pin them up.

Lovely gorgeous rustic garland of hearts to brighten up your home for only a few pence and a little time.

If you enjoyed this tutorial I would love to hear from you and if you make your own paper heart garlands I would love to see them!

Please post your photos of them on my Facebook page and everyone can enjoy them!
